for their slow response from superstorm sandy and getting power turned back on for those residents who were in the dark and the cold for a couple of weeks. our plans changed a little bit last night. we decided to spend the night in clarks summit because the road conditions deteriorated and we didn't want to go farther north. the borough president told me their snow totals were down last year and they were able to stockpile some of the salt from the roadways last year and that's what they're using for this storm. council president says they're happy this first snowstorm of the season hasn't been a major blizzard for them. >> we're on a good track this year and, you know, the weather, you take what you get. and, we're going to make lemonade out of it i guess. >> reporter: and for holiday travelers trying to make it home this weather has really thrown a wrench into their plans. a jetliner in pittsburgh actually got trapped somehow in the snow on the tarmac. as far as cancellations go, there were 1600 of them yesterday. more than 500 already today. and the airports in newark, new jersey, and al

sandy which obviously affected millions of people and really caught the public's imaginationment but it didn't end. coverage of other hurricanes h there is a beginning, a middle and an end. the fact is what sandy did or seems to have done is to take the idea of climate change from an abstraction, something that scientists and experts debated, to something that millions of people along the east coast and in manhattan and staten island and the other boroughs in new york city experienced for themselves and it started a debate. we don't know obviously what the long-term consequences are, but it does suggest there is something different about this story and its long-term implications. >> woodruff: and it's interesting, michael, because we've had big storms in this country before. >> sure. >> woodruff: but there was something different about this one? >> i think people are getting a little more alert to it politically. and one thing that historians of the future do is if something terrible happens, if climate change over the next 50 years or so achieve great injury to this earth, histo

happened at sandy hook elementary does not happen again. ultimately, the way this is going to happen is because the american people say, that's right. we are willing to make different choices for the country and we support those in congress who are willing to take those actions. and will there be resistance? absolutely, there will be resistance. and the question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here, that it does not just become another routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away. it certainly won't feel like that to me. this is something that -- you know, that was the worst day of my presidency and it's not something that i want to see repeated. >> let me ask you about a couple of foreign policy notes. after the attack in benghazi, is there a need for more accountability this doesn't happen again and do you know who was behind the attack at this point? >> two points. number one, i think tom pickrick and mike mullen who headed up the review board did a very thorough job in identifying what were s

the tax deal they are striking with the framework tonight. hurricane sandy recovery billion is $60.4 billion. it's about the same annually. >> preclintonnian tax and spend democratic philosophy. you take in $60 billion a year from the rich. and it's simply you spend half of that on unemployment insurance. the rest of is it spent on all the credits, tax credits which are going to be undone. which will be retaped. if a cliff is avoided and the deal was accepted. you take the money and you spend money. this would increase the debt and deficit. republicans have one choice in the house. i don't know if boehner is able to do it. we'll go over the cliff of midnight tonight. the rates will be at the high rate. the bush tax cut will be over. if boehner is smart and the republicans including the conservatives in the caucus are smart, they would accept that, because there is no way it will be stopped. on thursday, the new republican house, should pass a bill, stand-alone bill that abolishes -- well, say that in reenacts the bush cuts for everybody up to $450,000. do it as a straight tax reduc

. could have something to do with superstorm sandy. weak in yesterday's third quarter gdp report. profits, and these are the broadest gdp profits, covering about 5 million large and small companies really came in pretty good in the third quarter. up 9% from a year ago. so even though business looks weak, good profits could be the backbone of the stock market despite the hysteria of the fiscal cliff. let's talk to don -- for all th hysteria, profits are rising, the economy has got pluses and minuses. i'm not sure people need to pay all that attention to the fiscal cliff. >> well, if you look at what the global stock markets are doing, they suggest that our market would be doing significantly better were it not for the fiscal cliff. now profits have been good. i think people are getting used to the idea they trust corporate ceos more than they trust those that print government bonds that aren't really worth as much by the time they mature. they're also seeing a yield compression around the world. if you look at corporate beyond yields, they're about half of where they were just a year ago.
